What NaaS Is

Three years ago Networking as a Service was an interesting concept that a handful of forward-thinking enterprises were beginning to explore. Most customers were paying attention in the way you pay attention to something you are not quite ready to act on.

That has changed. What I am seeing today is organizations actively looking at NaaS as a way to consolidate LAN connectivity, SD-WAN, SASE capabilities, security, and managed services on a single subscription model. On-demand provisioning, elastic scalability, and automation are no longer selling points. They are expected. The conversation has moved from what is this to how do we get there.

NaaS is a cloud-enabled delivery model for networking: switches, routers, gateways, firewalls, WAN connectivity, wireless infrastructure, and the management platform that ties them together, all delivered as a service. The value proposition has evolved considerably from where it started. The early conversation was about operational efficiency: reducing capex, simplifying procurement, eliminating truck rolls. That is still part of it, but it is no longer the lead. The frame has shifted toward AI-native operations, zero-trust security, and strategic business outcomes. That is a meaningful evolution for a technology that was still explaining itself three years ago.

Where the Market Is Today

Enterprise interest in NaaS has accelerated, though adoption has been slower than the early analyst projections forecasted. Campus NaaS in particular remains in the early stages. This is not a knock on the technology. It is a pattern this market has seen before: strong concept, solid vendor offerings, slower organizational adoption than predicted. The direction is right. The timeline required calibration.

One of the most significant NaaS on-ramps right now is the Wi-Fi 7 refresh cycle. A large percentage of enterprises are still running Wi-Fi 5 infrastructure, and the transition to Wi-Fi 7 creates a natural decision point: refresh with traditional procurement, or use the refresh as the entry point into a campus NaaS model. Wi-Fi 7 access points require switch uplink upgrades to fully realize the performance gains, which makes this inherently a wired-and-wireless co-refresh, exactly what campus NaaS bundles are designed to deliver. For organizations that have been watching from the sidelines, this refresh cycle is the most compelling moment to evaluate.

AI and AIOps are delivering real value in NaaS platforms today, primarily in day-two operations: faster troubleshooting, proactive anomaly detection, predictive path recommendations, and capacity planning. Most enterprise environments are operating in an assisted mode where AI provides guidance and humans approve changes. That reflects both the current state of the technology and the organizational trust that autonomous network changes require. The honest assessment: real value in operations and AI-assisted troubleshooting, continued evolution toward more autonomous capabilities, and an emerging AI security use case as enterprises deploy generative AI tools, copilots, and internal AI agents that create new traffic patterns the network needs to classify and secure.

The vendor landscape has matured considerably. The major platform vendors offer streamlined subscription packs that bundle hardware, software, and services into single subscriptions. Purpose-built NaaS players have moved from niche to legitimate enterprise options with guaranteed performance SLAs and zero-touch management. Recent partnerships and acquisitions have started delivering the consolidated subscription models that buyers have been asking for. The competitive set is strong and the offerings are solid across the board.

What This Means for Your Organization

The TCO story for NaaS holds, but the reason it holds has shifted. Three years ago the pitch was largely about cost savings. Today what I am hearing from customers is something different: they need a more agile environment to support cloud and AI adoption, they are moving toward leaner IT teams, and cybersecurity is still number one on everybody's mind. The predictability of OpEx over unpredictable CapEx resonates in a way it did not before.

For organizations with lean IT teams, the labor savings from NaaS will outweigh the additional subscription costs in most scenarios. That is a meaningful inflection point for the business case. The caveat: organizations with strong, well-staffed in-house networking teams may find the math does not pencil as cleanly. NaaS TCO is not universal. It is contextual, and modeling your specific scenario rather than the vendor's scenario is where the real answer lives.

One of the most consistent issues we encounter at ePlus is organizations that jump straight from interest in NaaS to vendor evaluation without defining their requirements first. Why are you looking at this? What problem does NaaS solve for your organization specifically? What does success look like twelve months after deployment? Without clear answers to those questions, the evaluation process optimizes for the wrong things, and the deployment ends up adding complexity rather than reducing it.

The second common challenge is contract and exit-term assumptions. Not all NaaS offerings are structured the same way. Some vendors offer no exit-to-own option; hardware goes back at the end of the subscription. Vendor lock-in, SLA enforceability, and data sovereignty are all areas where the details matter more than the marketing language. Buyers should define their requirements before they define their vendor list.
